Clarence Linden Crabbe, born in Oakland, CA, was another Olympic medal winner to portray the character of “Tarzan”.  He was working in an uncredited role in the film That’s My Boy when MGM tested, and rejected, him for the role of “Tarzan”.  The following year he was cast as “Tarzan” in Tarzan the Fearless which was the only Tarzan film he made. He did, however, go on to star in more than one hundred movies, among them in the popular Flash Gordon serial in the lead role, Buck Rogers, several “Billy the Kid” films and 23 films as “Billy Carson”.
Buster Crabbe is the only actor to play Tarzan, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers characters who were the top three comic strip heroes of the 1930s.

Johann Peter Weissmuller was born in Freidorf, Banat, Austria-Hungry (now known as Romania).  He was a sickly and, on the advice of a doctor, took up swimming.  It definitely paid off because as a 6’3”, 190 pound champion swimmer he won 5 Olympic gold medals, one bronze medal, fifty-two US National Championships and set sixty-seven world records.  He retired from swimming with an unbeaten Amateur record.
Johnny Weissmuller is considered to be the quintessential portrayer of Tarzan.  He appeared in twelve Tarzan films including Tarzan the Ape Man, Tarzan and His Mate, Tarzan Finds a Son!, Tarzan’s New York Adventure, and Tarzan and the Mermaids.  After leaving the role of “Tarzan” Weissmuller took on the character of “Jungle Jim’ Jungle Jim started as a newspaper comic strip and then as a radio series before becoming a film series.  In all, Weissmuller starred in thirteen “Jungle Jim’ films and a season on the television series.
Johnny Weissmuller said, “I have always been vitally interested in physical condition.  I have long believed that athletic competition among people and nations should replace violence and wars.”  That’s a terrific idea!  Too bad it will never happen

Steve Bond was born as Shlomo Goldberg in Haifa Israel.  His film debut was as in the late 1960s as “Erik/Boy” in Tarzan and the Jungle Boy.  He appeared in three episodes of General Hospital as “Jimmy Lee Holt” and for one season on Santa Barbara. Later, he played seductive, but evil, vampire “Tom” in the film To Die For and the sequel Son of Darkness: To Die For II.  Bond posed for a nude centerfold in Playgirl Magazine in the early 1980s

Errol Leslie Flynn was born in Hobart, Tasmania, Austriala.  His notorious behaviors began at an early age when he was expelled from almost every school he was enrolled in.  After some failed business attempts he left for the UK, and, in his early 20s, managed to get an acting job with the Northampton repertory company at the Royal Theater.  He then appeared as “Fletcher Christian” in the Australian film In The Wake of the Bounty. He  immigrated to the US as a contract actor for Warner Brothers studios and became an overnight sensation when he starred in Captain Blood.  He became known as the king of the swashbuckler films.  Captain Blood was followed by The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Prince and the Pauper, The Adventures of Robin Hood many other films of the same genre.
Off screen Errol Flynn was known for his love of drinking, fighting, womanizing and boating which quickly took its toll on his youthful good looks, causing his career to dwindle.  In his later years he was mainly case as aging alcoholics such as “Mike Campbell” in the film version of Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises and as “John Barrymore” in Too Much, Too Soon, roles that were almost mirror images of Flynn himself. He is quoted as saying, “I intend to live the first half of my life.  I don’t care about the rest.”  Errol Flynn was dead of a heart attack at the age of 50.

Dewey Martin, was born in Katemcy, TX.  Although he worked with several successful Hollywood stars such as Humphrey Bogart, Van Johnson, Audie Murphy, and Kirk Douglas, Martin never became a big star himself.  He was uncredited in the first film he appeared in which was Knock on Any Door starring Humphrey Bogart.  Another uncredited role was in a film starring Van Johnson called Battleground.  He went on to co-star with Kirk Douglas in The Big Sky,  appeared as “Ensign Kenneth Schecter” in another film starring Van Johnson titled Men of the Fighting Lady, and in The Desperate Hours, again, with star Humphrey Bogart.
He turned to television and worked in dozens of series episodes such as The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Death Valley Days, Hawaii Five-O and Police Story.

Theodore Anthony “Ted” Nugent, hard rock/heavy metal guitarist, was born in Detroit, MI.  He joined the rock band The Amboy Dukes in 1964.  The band is best remembered for their hit single “Journey to the Center of the Mind”.  The song was about hallucinogenic drugs and the feeling of an acid trip. Nugent, who never did drugs and was an anti-drug campaigner, claims that he never realized the song was about drug use.
After leaving The Amboy Dukes in 1975, Nugent pursued a solo career.  His backup band consisted of Derek St. Holmes, Rob Grange, and Clifford Davies.  Together with Nugent, they released three multi-platinum albums: Ted Nugent, Free-for-All, and Cat Scratch Fever. Near the end of the 1980s he formed Damn Yankees.  The members, which included Jack Blades, Tommy Shaw, and Michael Cartellone were already famous rock musicians.  The band was a hit, selling 5 million album s.  Nugent returned to a solo career releasing the album Spirit of the Wild in 1995.  In 2009 Ted Nugent reunited with members of the Amboy Dukes at the Detroit Music Awards where they received a distinguished achievement honor.  They also played together at the ceremony.  It was their first public performance in more than 30 years.
During his lengthy career, Nugent has released more than 34 albums, soled more than 30 million records and done more than 6,000 concerts. He announced his “Trample the weak, hurdle the dead” tour in April 2010.  Tour dates are still being finalized.

Joseph Angelo D’Allesandro III, born in Pensacola, FL, was one of Andy Warhol superstars.  He was never a mainstream film star but he is thought to be the most famous sex symbol of American underground film and the gay subculture.  He starred in the film Flesh as a teenage street hustler.  The film was cited by Rolling Stone magazine as 1970’s Best film of the Year which made Dallesandro a star of the youth culture, and sexual revolution.  He appeared in several Warhol films including The Loves of Ondine, Lonesome Cowboys, Trash, Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein and Andy Warhol’s Dracula.
New York Times film critic Vincent Canby once said of Dallesandro “His physique if so magnificently shaped that men as well as women become disconnedted at the sight of him.  Andy Warhol commented “In my movies, everyone’s in love with Joe Dallesandro.

Eddie Dew, born in Sumner, WA was an American actor and film and television director.  He began his acting career appearing in small, and mainly uncredited film roles.  His first substantial roles were as “Captain Kendall” in Military Academy and “Henchman French” in Dude Cowboy.  He then had two leading roles in Beyond the Last Frontier and Raiders of Sunset Pass.  He also appeared in many films with fellow actor Rod Cameron such as Trigger Trail and Renegades of the Rio Grande.
Although he continued to act his career moved more into film and television directing in the early 1950s.  He directed the television series Sergeant Preston of the Yukon which ran for three seasons

Exotic, sensual Vincent Perez was born in Lausanne, Vaud, Switzerland.  Most of his work has been in French films such as La Maison de Jade (The House of Jade) opposite Jacqueline Bisset, Le bossu, and  Indochine with Catherine Deneuve.  His breakthrough role was as the naïve, vacant lover “Christian” opposite Gerard Depardieu in Cyrano de Bergerac.   Perez came to international attention as the title character “Ashe Corven” in The Crow” City of Los Angeles, and as “Marius de Romanus” in Queen of the Damned.

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, whose stage name is Sting, was born in Wallsend, England.  The name Sting came from a black and yellow sweater he wore onstage that, according to bandleader Gordon Soloman, made him look like a wasp.  In the late 1970s Sting, Stewart  Copeland and Henry Padovani (soon to be replaced by Andy Summers) formed the New Wave Band The Police.  Five of their albums reached the top of the charts and won six Grammy Awards.  Their album Sychronicity included Every Breath You Take which was the most successful song the band ever recorded.
Sting his first solo performance in September, 1981.  He performed on all four nights of the fourth Amnesty International benefit “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball.  He performed Roxanne, Message in a Bottle and his own arrangement of Bob Dylan’s I Shall Be Released.  His first solo album was “The Dream of the Blue Turtles” which included the hit single If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.  Sting left The Police in 1983 and continued a solo career.  Combining both his performances with The Police and his solo career, Sting has received sixteen Grammy Awards.
He has also done some acting.  Film credits include the role of “Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen” in the 1984 sci-fi film Dune.  Sting was quoted as saying, “My job is being a musician.  I just make films for fun, really.”
